The Thanksgiving Play is a satirical comedy about four white people trying to devise a politically correct First Thanksgiving play to be done in the schools for Native American Heritage Month. It was written by a Native American (Larissa FastHorse) as a satire about political correctness. It contains satirical depictions of violence and culturally insensitive topics. Certain physical characteristics are specified for the first four characters listed below as required in the script. Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition for the remaining characters.
Characters:
LOGAN – Female; Any age; Girlfriend of (and kisses) JAXTON
High school drama teacher who is desperate about losing her job due to angry parents (She scheduled The Iceman Cometh as a play for 15-year-olds); Very insecure; She is pushing the envelope in potentially inappropriate ways; Is earnest about theater and proving herself; Yoga amateur (will be doing various asanas during the performance); Hair (or wig), any color but must be long enough to do a hair flip; Plain looking in contrast to ALICIA; Smart (She’s been tested!)
JAXTON – Male; Any age; Boyfriend of (and kisses) LOGAN;
Think “The Dude” Lebowski; possibly barefoot throughout; slacker; man bun? Yoga practitioner (very supple, will be doing many various asanas during the performance); Wannabe actor; Unorganized; Favors sitting on floor, backwards on chair; Politically correct to a fault, a big one; Confident guy that everyone loves, but his logical PC thinking takes weird turns
ALICIA – Female; Any age; Brunette/not blonde, hair (or wig) long enough to do a hair flip;
Caucasian but can pass for Native American, Latin, Asian Indian, etc. LA Actress stylish; Without guile; Attractive and body comfortable; Not smart (She’s also been tested!)
CADEN – Male; Any age; Nerdy; An academic;
Awkward elementary school history teacher with dramatic aspirations but no experience; Wannabe playwright, but clueless about the stage; Ineptly attracted to ALICIA; Does not do Yoga and has trouble with it.
TEACHER – Any age; Very PC; Proper; Bubbly; Conservative
STUDENTS – Any age; Multiple parts available; Will appear in multiple scenes in costume dressed as Turkeys; Native Americans; Pilgrims; Cowboys; Pumpkins; Thugs (hoodies, sunglasses, baggy pants, etc)
Auditions will be cold readings from the script and possibly some improv. Contact the Director (after May 15) (GaryRomans@Poetic.com) for audition sides or questions. If you cannot make the listed audition dates accommodations are possible.
