Executive Board
The Executive Board is elected by the membership of Mask & Mirror each spring, and consists of six officers and three members at large. These people oversee a slate of committees organized to conduct the activities of the organization.
Information about the Executive Board members:
President Rick Hoover is originally from Tustin, California. Rick majored in theatre in high school and college, and started his career as a dancer in the Christmas parades at Disneyland. He worked as an extra in Hollywood on Guilty or Innocent, The Sam Shepard Murder Case, All In The Family, and General Hospital. Over his career, Rick has been involved in over 50 productions as either an actor, director or technical.
Rick first got involved with Mask & Mirror when he saw a call for one of our public play readings. This led to auditioning (not cast) and then directing his first show with M&M. He has since directed two other shows for M&M and also directed (and edited) two of our recent radio shows: War of the Worlds and Help Desk, and edited A Christmas Carol, Motherhood Out Loud and Crossing the Barre - entertainment that Mask & Mirror has provided during the pandemic. Rick is also a member of the Executive Board and is the Technical Director as well as a former Back Lot manager, occasional producer, frequent stage
builder and always there at strike. 6/10/2022, 3 year term
Immediate Past President John Knowles I have been on the Executive Board of Mask and Mirror for a year and have enjoyed serving. I have been in three M&M productions as an actor, built the set for another, and otherwise volunteered my services when needed. I am also a lawyer, arbitrator and mediator, as well as a part time Circuit Court Judge, and will bring the skills I have learned in those professions to the role of President. 6/10/2022
Vice President Kathleen Silloway has been active in the Portland-area theater community since moving here in 2015. She has served as a member of the Mask & Mirror Play Selection Committee for 4 years and performed in Unmasked productions, as well as with a variety of companies in the area. An active front-of-house volunteer, she looks forward to working with the Mask & Mirror board and serving its community. 6/10/2022, 2 year term
Secretary Laurie Monday Active with Mask & Mirror since 2017, when I appeared in 'String of Pearls', I have been fortunate to have performed in numerous M&M shows since then. Recently I was co-chair of the Play Selection Committee and a committee member for many years before that. I was a child and teen actor, performed comedy professionally in Los Angeles and am a licensed (retired) psychotherapist. 6/23/2023, 3 year term
Treasurer Dwayne Thurnau has been involved with Mask and Mirror for the last several years as the box office manager, the Board of Trustees and actor. He is excited for the opportunity to take on the role as Treasurer and serving
on the Executive Board. He has been an accountant for over 25 years which he will bring those skills and knowledge into the role of treasurer.6/23/2021, 3 year term
Member-at-Large John Bartholomew While very active as both an actor and a magician prior to college, John returned to the stage after a long hiatus, performing in nine Mask & Mirror productions starting with the second season as well as several other shows in the greater Portland area. He has served on the Mask & Mirror Board (Member at Large 2014-2017), Board of Trustees (2016-2018), President (2018-2020) and manages the theatre's web site and grants. John has been a Tigard/Tualatin resident for over 30 years, and works as a software engineer. 6/10/2022 2 year term
Member-at Large Hertsel Shadian I have been practicing law in Oregon since 2000 and am also licensed in Washington state.
For almost the entirety of that time, I have worked to form and advise various nonprofit organizations as a natural extension of my tax, business and estate planning practice. I also have served on the Board of nonprofits, including currently (since approximately 2015) an arts nonprofit that operates in Northwest Portland called The Circus Project. I have a deep appreciation for music, arts, and all forms of live performances, including theater, as well as the artists and performers that toil at their craft. I believe both my legal and non-legal background would be valuable assets to the organization. 6/10/2022 2 year term
Member-at-Large Peter Bolger My first theatrical performance was at the age of ten, followed by many roles for community theatre groups as well as high school. In college, I became a DJ and stayed in the broadcasting business for 47 years in various cities, including Portland where I was a DJ for KGON. I was accountable for team creation, marketing and for meeting budget and audience measurement goals. When I retired in 2019, my wife and I returned to Portland. Since then I’ve been fortunate
to get cast in several shows, including three with Mask & Mirror. Recently, I was appointed as the editor of Mask & Mirror’s monthly newsletter. It's unbelievable to me that it took me 47 years to get back on a stage! I’m very happy I found Mask & Mirror. 6/10/2022 2 year term
