Mask & Mirror History
In February 2011, a group of actors who had worked together in community theatres gathered at the home of Gary and Pat Romans in Tigard, Oregon, to read a new play by a local playwright. In the discussion following the reading, the idea of a different breed of community theatre was germinated.
Eight of the actors made the decision to establish a true community theatre, democratically run by its membership, with the purpose of engaging people both artistically and socially.
On June 20, 2011, nearly 100 people came to the Tualatin Library to learn about Mask & Mirror. At the Tigard Balloon Festival in June, another 40 requested more information. The Tualatin Crawfish Festival in August showed that interest in live theatre is thriving in that community, as even more people signed on.
In September 2011 the group held the first quarterly Community meeting at the Tigard Chamber of Commerce. In October of 2011, Mask & Mirror started the first in its series of play readings at our local libraries.
November 2011 marked the opening date of Mask & Mirror’s first play, ‘The Green Room," a comedy about opening night backstage at a community theatre, by Peggy Glisson. It was a rousing success. That first season continued with "Robin Hood-the Musical," by Glen and Sandy Libonati, and 'Murder at Brackenfern' by Fred Cooprider.
The second season opened with "A Dickens Christmas Carol-A Traveling Travesty in Two Tumultuous Acts" by Mark Landon Smith, continued with a melodrama, "How Sweet Was My Swamp" by Wayne Norman, and ended with a Southern-style adaptation of the classic "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde.
The second season also witnessed the founding of two new 'troupes' within Mask & Mirror: The Traveling Thespians and the Mask & Mirror Singers.. Both these groups provide free entertainment to community organizations and facilities, promote the company, and provide additional opportunities for our talented members to perform.
The third season shows were “No, No, a Million Times No,” a musical melodrama by Crawford & Tompkins, “Sylvia,” a comedy by A.R. Gurney, and “Over the River and Through the Woods”, a heart-warming comedy by Joe DiPietro.
The fourth season offers three more comedies: “Play On” by Rick Abbott, “Dearly Beloved” by the comedy team of Jones, Hope, & Wooten, and “The Curious Savage,” by John Patrick.
